Integral research of spatial and temporal aspects of renewable energy sources

Title Integral research of spatial and temporal aspects of renewable energy sources
Abstract The exploitation of renewable energy sources (RES) becomes even more feasible with the development of technology and substantial decrease in prices of RES. However, strong geographic and time discrepancies of RES in conjunction with their low energy flux significantly reduces their field of application, and accurate spatial and temporal identification of renewable energy potential and evaluation of energy demand profile becomes ever more paramount. The density of existing surface wind measurement stations in the Republic of Croatia is insufficient for a reliable application of microscale numerical wind flow models for wind resource assessment in the whole Croatia, or at least its major part. This problem is particularly expressed in areas with a predominantly complex orography. This project intends to prove the assumption that, in the areas without continuous wind measurements, the wind climate in the surface layer of the atmosphere (up to 200 m above ground) can be better described by coupling the mesoscale prognostic and the microscale diagnostic numerical wind flow models. The project would significantly improve the available data, the procedures and the bases for wind potential assessment, explore wind potential in the mountainous regions of the hinterland, as well as of the lowland and the mountain regions of continental Croatia. Temporal characteristics of the wind resource will also be investigated and compared with other renewable energy sources in order to get integral picture of their spatial and temporal variability in Croatia. Based on data measured in the course of this project and historic data from measurement stations and measurement of the ratio of diffuse and direct solar radiation components, spatial distribution of solar radiation will be determined. Spatial irradiation models based on GIS platform using digital terrain model as an input will be used. This research is of high importance for application of renewable energy sources in Croatia as well as for determining their potential role in the Croatian energy sector. The beneficiaries of the project are public and private entities acting in the energy sector, as well as wider scientific community interested in the subject.
